Photographer

Carl J. Horner “is the only photographer in the country who can supply upon demand the photograph of any manager or player in either major league.”
Sporting Life, June 20, 1903

From 1902 to 1909, Horner photographed hundreds of major-league baseball players. He thereby created a vivid and extensive record of the period. This site is dedicated to preserving and sharing his work.

The alphabetical galleries present a collection of about 450 of Horner’s baseball portraits. Each player is identified. The estimated year of the portrait, and the player’s team and position that year, are indicated. A caption gives a quotation about the player from a period newspaper. Perusing the galleries is a step back in time, to the first decade of the “Deadball” Era.

Horner published these portraits in the United States more than 95 years ago. They are in the public domain.
